Ah, November! Now that the election is over, perhaps things will quiet down some. Wishful thinking? Probably! Anyway, we shouldn’t let that disrupt our focus on the positive aspects of life. November is a season of gratitude, a time where we reflect on our blessings and appreciate the goodness in our lives.
This season of thanks invites us to step away from the noise around us and instead focus inward. In a world overrun with constant chatter and division, it’s important to recognize what we can control—our own attitudes and reactions. By prioritizing a peaceful environment, we can create a ripple effect of positivity. And, honestly, who wouldn’t want more good energy around?
Giving Thanks and Spreading Goodness
Even if you’re not in the best headspace to celebrate right now, giving thanks is truly one of the best ways to lift your spirits. Everyone experiences a touch of crankiness or sadness now and then; it’s only human. But rather than dwelling on those feelings, we can choose to channel our energy into more productive and joyful activities.
So, get ready for some cheer! Here are ten easy ways to celebrate this season of gratitude:
1. Create Handmade Thank You Cards
Technology has disrupted the charm of old-school Thank You notes. I’m personally a fan of handwritten cards, especially when they genuinely reflect the personality and effort of the sender. I’ve received AI-generated Thank You notes, and trust me—it’s obvious.
That said, I understand that people appreciate the convenience and simplicity of a quick text or e-mail, AI-enhanced or not. However, to celebrate this season of gratitude, I sincerely think spending a moment to thoughtfully curate your own Thank Yous can make a big impact.

Taking the time and effort to create handmade Thank You cards isn’t just about expressing gratitude; it’s about creating meaningful connections that go beyond surface-level interactions, particularly in today’s digital landscape. It’s ironic how we are all so interconnected technologically, and yet many of us feel alone. In fact, a June 2023 study found that 30% of Americans feel lonelier than ever, despite increased online interactions.
In a world flooded with quick messages and instant replies, a tangible Thank You card is sure to stand out, making the recipient feel truly valued. A Thank You is worth saying no matter the scale of the gesture or relationship. Not sure where to start? A simple index card with a sincere sentence or two goes a long way. If you’re feeling more expressive, consider handwriting a letter or breaking out your arts and crafts skills for a personalized memento.
2. Declutter and Donate
How much stuff do you have sitting in storage? If you take a moment to consider your belongings, you might be surprised to find items that have been collecting dust for years. Ask yourself if these items truly serve a purpose in your life. If not, it’s time to let them go.
I’m a big believer in keeping the things that have significant sentimental value or practical use. I can do without excess, as it just weighs me down. A cluttered space clutters my mind! Take inventory of your treasures and determine what you’re ready to let go of. It’s important to acknowledge the privilege of owning these items and the opportunity to pass them on. Donating these items not only frees up space but also allows for a second lease on life.
3. Greet Others with an Intentional Good Morning
Good energy is often contagious. When I’m greeted with a hearty “Good morning!” I can’t help but to return the same enthusiasm. Intentional greetings seem pretty rare these days. Maybe that contributes to why so many people feel so isolated! Spread happiness. Be intentional. Be authentic.
Wishing others a good morning is a small act that can brighten someone’s day and even encourage a sense of community. You might feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you aren’t used to initiating interactions. You’ll probably encounter a few curmudgeons along the way who barely acknowledge you. Don’t let that discourage you from greeting others with a big ol’ smile and a cheery “Good Morning!” Life’s short. Each new morning brings new possibilities, reminding us to foster positivity in our lives and in the world around us.
4. Keep a Gratitude Journal
What’s a season of gratitude without a gratitude journal? It’s the perfect way to keep track of all of the wonderful experiences and people we’re grateful for throughout the year. I love to see things written down in black and white. It’s a physical reminder that encourages us to pause and celebrate the little moments. Quite simply, a gratitude journal helps us maintain a positive mindset, even during challenging times.
Whether you’re a pen-and-paper kind of person like me or prefer the ease of a phone or laptop, keeping a gratitude journal can be as straightforward or as creative as your imagination allows. Some enjoy jotting down a quick list of three things per day, while others use guided prompts for deeper reflection.
There are countless approaches to a gratitude journal. Other methods include:
- Photo Journaling: Taking a photo of something you’re thankful for and writing a brief reflection.
- Visual Gratitude Board: Creating a collage board with images and quotes that inspire gratitude.
- Art Journaling: Combining writing with drawings or paintings.
- Voice Memos: Verbally recording your thoughts of appreciation, from small moments to big events.
- Quotes and Affirmations: Incorporating inspirational quotes and affirmations that resonate with you.
- Themed Sections: Separating gratitude experiences into different sections, such as relationships, achievements, or nature, for deeper, more specific reflection.
5. Practice Active Gratitude During Difficult Times
How often do we let stressful situations get to our heads? They can disrupt our peace, and depending on whether we’re tired or hungry, they might even cause us to spiral a bit! In moments like these, it’s helpful to take a step back and gain some perspective. Despite whatever difficult times we face, there is always something good to acknowledge and appreciate. You just have to be open to looking for it.
Active gratitude is about appreciating the good things, even when they’re not perfect. It’s being grateful for a roof over your head when the AC checks out, or appreciating the comfort of your bed, even if you didn’t get much sleep. It’s choosing to focus on what you have rather than what you lack.

6. Communicate Gratefulness
Healthy, constructive communication builds trust and emotional safety. It creates a space where people feel valued and heard, which leads to stronger, more supportive relationships. It also helps to prevent unnecessary tension and encourage more positive vibes!
The next time you experience a kind gesture or someone opens up to you, consider responding in such a way that communicates gratitude and empathy. Verbalizing gratefulness out loud is a powerful and effective way to celebrate this season of gratitude and foster a positive environment.
7. Limit Negative Content
“If it bleeds, it leads.” If you haven’t heard this phrase before, it originates from the 1890s, where news stories of tragedy and violence were often prioritized because they attracted more attention. Not much has changed in the world of journalism or general media, for that matter. And now that we have 24-hour news and social media access, guess what kind of content we see all day, every day?
Sensationalized nonsense clutters our screens, leaving little room for simple, happy narratives that celebrate kindness and hope. Limiting access to negative content can broaden our minds and emotional well-being, helping us create a more balanced and positive outlook.
Curate your life and social feed to disconnect from topics and people that don’t bring you joy. If you’re unable to cut ties completely, then focus on creating healthy boundaries that minimize negativity.
- Unfollow accounts that consistently post stressful or negative content.
- Follow pages, people, and organizations that share uplifting stories and inspirational content.
- Delete your social media altogether.
- Designate specific times to catch up on current events.
- Practice digital detox days.
- Reduce or eliminate contact with negative-minded people.
- Surround yourself with people who bring positivity into your life.
8. Connect with Nature
Mother Nature has a way of humbling us with her power. In all of her vastness, she gently reminds us that we are part of something far greater than ourselves. This season of gratitude, take time to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the beauty and resilience around you. Despite the storms and intensity nature endures, she continuously adapts and grows into the next season.
Nature offers several reasons to be grateful, whether it’s the warmth of the sun, falling leaves, or the food it grows. Recognizing the simple gifts nature provides reminds us of the small blessings in our own lives.
- Take daily walks.
- Plant a tree, flower, or garden.
- Practice meditation outdoors.
- Watch the sunrise or sunset.
- Pick up litter.
- Enjoy a picnic.
- Stargaze.
- Practice forest-bathing.

9. Thanksgiving with a Twist
Host an alternative Thanksgiving meal where each guest brings a dish that represents what they’re thankful for and a story to go along with it! It doesn’t have to be fancy or even on Thanksgiving Day.
The beauty of this gathering is in the sharing—of food, memories, and gratitude. It’s a fulfilling way to bond with loved ones and reflect on the good things that have shaped your year while creating memories that celebrate connection and appreciation.
10. Volunteer Your Time
Last but not least, one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate a season of gratitude is by giving back to others. Volunteering your time—whether it’s helping someone move, teaching a free class, or lending a hand at a shelter—can have a profound impact on both you and those around you. It fosters connection with others and contributes to your own sense of fulfillment and positivity.
Volunteering our time reminds us of just how much we already have. It helps shift our perspective from being preoccupied with our own lives to the many blessings we sometimes overlook.
Make It a Daily Habit
Why limit all of this good energy and happiness to a season? Celebrating gratitude can be a year-round practice that brings joy, fulfillment, and perspective to each day. The more we recognize and appreciate what we have to be thankful for, the more we find peace and happiness in our lives.
By incorporating small, intentional acts of gratitude into our daily routines, such as writing a note to someone we appreciate or taking a moment each morning to jot down what we’re grateful for, we train our minds to focus on the good. It eventually becomes second nature, making it easier to roll with the punches and handle whatever comes our way.
What’s one thing you’re grateful for today?
