Have you ever felt like your week has completely drained all of your energy? Between work and all other commitments, it can feel as though there’s nothing left to bring home. The last thing you want to think about is tackling laundry or dirty dishes. Some days, all you really want is to collapse on the couch and zone out rather than deal with household chores.
I absolutely get that feeling. You tell yourself you’ll catch up when you can. Of course, by the time the weekend rolls around, you’d rather enjoy downtime, leaving to-dos for another day. After a while, especially when the weeks are particularly hectic, it can feel like you’re fighting a losing battle. Each task piles on top of the last, and you begin to realize that your weekends are no longer relaxing because your mind is distracted by countless to-dos.
So how do we get back on track to a more simplified and manageable routine?
Household Hacks for a Simpler Life
I’ve experimented with a few tricks over the years that have made a huge difference in how Brian and I tackle chores at home. These household hacks don’t just save us time; they streamline our routines, creating a calm space for us to enjoy the little things.
Here’s what works for us:
1. Establish a Cleaning Schedule
A cleaning schedule doesn’t have to be rigid or cumbersome. I follow a flexible guide that fits into my routine, making it easy to stay on top of things without feeling overwhelmed. Every two weeks, I deep clean the bathroom. Brian and I take care of laundry on certain days. I sweep the kitchen every night and sweep the rest of the downstairs at least once a week.
Not only does a cleaning schedule help keep the house tidy, but it also lightens the mental load of endless chores. Consider a mix of daily and weekly tasks that suit your routine for easy convenience. You’d be surprised how this little bit of structure can simplify your life and free up your weekends!
2. Clean as You Go
With a ‘clean as I go’ mentality, daily chores feel less like chores and more like a natural part of my day. From cooking and meal prep to early morning rituals, I seamlessly organize and tidy without even thinking about it.
The idea of cleaning as you go is all about minimizing future disorder and maximizing efficiency. By taking a few extra moments to clean up during the day, you simplify daily tasks, making it easier to enjoy a clutter-free, relaxed lifestyle. A few examples of how to integrate this practice into daily life include:
- Make your bed every morning as you listen to the news or your favorite podcast.
- Wipe down bathroom counters while you’re brushing your teeth.
- Clean kitchen counters after dinner or as coffee brews.
- Put away ingredients right after use when cooking or meal-prepping.
- Wash pots, pans, and other dishes while food is cooking.
- Sweep or vacuum high-traffic areas daily.
- Sort mail as soon as you bring it into the house.
- Take five minutes to do a quick tidy-up before sitting down to relax.
Another trick I like is keeping a basket or spot near the door for things that belong elsewhere. This makes it easy to put things away as I’m passing by!
3. Tag-Team Chores
If you’re living with others, tag-teaming chores can take the pressure off a busy week and reduce the overall workload for everyone. Brian and I will often divide tasks by preference, choosing to focus on the chores we enjoy. It’s an easy way to get things done quickly and done well.
4. Create Routines
Just as a cleaning schedule helps you stay on top of household duties, establishing routines can keep you organized and accountable. Morning rituals, such as a short walk or quick breakfast prep, set a positive tone for the day. Likewise, an evening wind-down routine can signal your mind that it’s time to relax.
Routines automate decisions and can help you create second-nature patterns and habits that allow you to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Eventually, chores and other responsibilities become part of your daily rhythm.
Carving out specific times for activities such as exercise, meal prepping, and financial planning has allowed us to streamline our lives and focus on the things that matter!
5. Consolidate Tasks
Keep an eye out for opportunities to tackle multiple things at once. Consolidating tasks can save you considerable time and effort. For example, if you’re already planning to pick up groceries, consider doing it during your commute. Combine laundry by also washing bedding while you’re washing your clothes. You can also incorporate errands into your exercise by walking or biking to places you need to visit.
One of my personal favorites is cleaning my shower while I’m in it — two birds, one stone!

6. Meal Prep for Easy Cooking
Dedicating a couple of hours over the weekend to meal prep can save so much time during the week! Start by planning your meals with an uncomplicated grocery list. We mostly stick to fresh produce and other whole foods, which makes meal prep quick and easy with simple recipes and minimal cleanup.
Once you’ve picked up your groceries, chop and portion out veggies and, if you wish, marinate proteins. Store everything in reusable containers for quick access. Not only does meal prep help you eat healthier, but it also reduces decision fatigue and cook time after a long, hectic day.
Enjoy Home Life
Reclaim your energy. With these household hacks, you don’t have to feel drained by chores that take away your time and well-being. Instead of running on empty, create a more relaxed lifestyle that allows you to fully enjoy your home. Ultimately, maintaining small routines and incorporating quick tidying will simplify your life and free up time for the things and people you love.
Home life shouldn’t be a source of stress or clutter; it should be a haven where you can unwind and recharge, especially during a draining work week. Imagine being in a space that brings you peace rather than nagging disorder! Investing in these household hacks is an investment in a simpler, more balanced life. Don’t underestimate the value of a few dedicated moments each day to maintain a space that allows you to fully enjoy your time off.
