Mass tourism has exploited once-beloved, under-the-radar destinations, ultimately causing them to lose their local charm and appeal.
While I appreciate good intel and a healthy amount of online sleuthing, it’s important to acknowledge that it matters where we find information and how we choose to use it.
Through a combination of online research, word-of-mouth recommendations, and embracing the unknown, you’ll have the confidence to step off the beaten path wherever you go.

Engage in Online Forums with Specifics
The internet is typically the first stop when researching for a potential trip. It’s an endless source of information, connecting users to travel websites, reviews, and fellow adventurers. In fact, one of the most useful aspects of online research is gaining access to niche communities focused on specific interests.
Tripadvisor and Reddit, for example, offer specialized subreddits and forums that feature discussions related to travel itineraries, insider tips, and more. When you’re scouring these forums, avoid asking or researching for generic recommendations—get specific! These communities can be incredibly helpful, but it’s still the internet, which means that lazy, generic questions are often met with sarcasm and quick dismissals.
While searching for hidden gems, you’ll want to consider and perhaps disclose your personal interests for relevant feedback. There’s a wealth of recommendations for every kind of traveler, whether you’re an adventure seeker, an art lover, a foodie, or a history buff.
Of course, I’ll always insist on completing due diligence by cross-referencing multiple sources to ensure safety and accuracy. It’s not usually a great idea to blindly follow online advice!

Road tripping is all about the journey. Instead of strictly sticking to public transportation or driving on the main highways, embrace the scenic backroads and enjoy the adventure.
Even though Brian and I have barely dug into our Japan itinerary, we knew pretty quickly that we were going to road trip at least part of it! Road trips are one of our favorite ways to explore a destination up close. They allow you full control of your itinerary, giving you the freedom to explore as little or as much as you want.
The scenic route offers the chance to stumble upon quaint roadside eateries, breathtaking viewpoints, or charming storefronts. Ultimately, it’s the encounters along the way that create memorable experiences!
Word to the wise, however: Be mindful of local laws and customs, and trust your instincts!

There’s something special about getting lost in a new city. As you wander through unfamiliar neighborhoods, you’re immersed in its sights, sounds, and smells, experiencing the destination in a way that you simply can’t replicate from a vehicle. Taking the time to stroll through crowds and along quiet streets can reveal hidden parks, artisan shops, and local cafes tucked away from the busy town center. By exploring on foot, you not only discover these hidden gems, but you also gain a more local perspective on the city’s lifestyle and vibe.
Venture into Smaller Towns and Villages Nearby
Exploring the small towns outside a major city is among my top tips for budget-friendly travel. Not only is it typically much more affordable, but it’s also a wonderful chance to connect with the community and experience the local way of life. Generally, the pace is quite different from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots within the main city.
You might come across an obscure, quirky museum or a family-owned restaurant that serves some of the best food you’ve ever tasted. I personally find that smaller towns often provide a more direct glimpse into the local culture, showcasing traditions that may be overshadowed in busy tourist areas.
Chat with Locals
Speaking of exploring the local way of life—strike up a conversation with those around you! Don’t underestimate the power of casual conversation. Whether you’re chatting with a shop owner, bartender, or someone you meet on the street, locals usually have the best insights.
They might even share their favorite local hangouts or experiences that you wouldn’t have otherwise come across. So, if you’re curious about the area, don’t hesitate to start a conversation and see where it takes you!
Join a Curated Experience or Tour
If planning isn’t your thing, curated tours provide a great way to explore without the hassle. Brian and I have enjoyed a range of guided experiences both domestically and abroad. From food tours to historical excursions, we’ve discovered incredible local spots that we wouldn’t have found on our own. These interactive experiences not only connect you to other travelers but also offer a chance to meet locals in meaningful ways.

Consider skipping overhyped places plastered all over Instagram and YouTube.
