Thanksgiving is just around the corner! I’d like to take a second to appreciate the fact that we are able to enjoy the holiday with family. It’s a chance to pause, reflect on what we’re grateful for, and make some good memories. However, while this time of year brings so much joy, it can also be a bit overwhelming—especially when it comes to the holiday meal. Unfortunately, inflation has made preparing a Thanksgiving feast more costly in recent years. Thankfully, with a little planning and smart shopping, you can still enjoy a delicious and affordable Thanksgiving celebration.

Cut Costs on Thanksgiving Groceries

Whether you’re cooking for a big crowd or a small family, there are simple strategies to save money on your Thanksgiving groceries. In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite tips to help you cut costs without compromising on flavor or your holiday spirit!

Keep it Simple

Don’t overthink your menu. By sticking to a few crowd favorites like turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing, you can spend more time with your guests and less time in the kitchen. A wonderful Thanksgiving meal doesn’t have to be complicated or extravagant.

Skip pre-packaged sides or costly gourmet add-ons. Paring down your menu and preparing less food will help you avoid unnecessary expenses. Consider the amount of leftovers you usually have—and try to prepare just enough to avoid both food and money waste.

Make it a Potluck

Save both time and money with a potluck dinner! When you host a large party, things can get pricey fast. Asking guests to bring a dish can significantly reduce the amount of shopping and cooking you need to do. A potluck celebration brings a sense of community and variety to the table without the extra cost. However, don’t forget to coordinate with your guests to avoid duplicate dishes or to accommodate allergies!

Take Advantage of Sales

Shopping sales are one surefire way to save on Thanksgiving groceries. Luckily, stores generally run discounts on seasonal items leading up to the holiday. Check your local grocery stores’ weekly ads to compare sales and plan your shopping accordingly. Sometimes people like to stick to one grocery store, but this usually ends up costing a lot more than it should, especially when you factor in Buy One, Get One Free deals and other special promotions.

Additionally, consider picking up quick sale items that are close to their sell-by date. Brian and I often plan our weekly meals with these items, which keeps our grocery bill pretty low as we make the most of last-minute markdowns. It’s also a super-easy way to help reduce the amount of perfectly good food from ending up in landfills!

Cross-Check Prices Online

I love the fact that so many grocery stores have websites with real-time pricing. This type of digital convenience makes a big difference in planning my shopping lists. Though I will first review weekly ads before visiting grocery stores, I will also cross-check prices online to ensure that I am finding the best deals.

While this approach may take a little extra time, it has saved us quite a bit of money and extra trips. Brian and I ordinarily cross-check prices when we shop, and doing so for holiday groceries is no different!

Buy Off-Brand

Why pay top dollar for name-brand products when generic brands usually provide the same quality? Name-brand products can cost anywhere from 20% to 60% more than store-brand. Ouch! That’s a steep price to pay, especially when stocking up for a holiday meal.

Discount grocery stores like Aldi and Lidl often offer store-brand staples such as chicken broth, canned vegetables, and baking ingredients at great prices. Brian and I enjoy exploring off-brand options, particularly during the holiday season. Not only do we save money, but we also get to try new products.

Visit International Grocery Stores

If you are within reasonable distance of an international grocery store, I highly suggest you stop in to see what it has to offer. International grocery stores tend to have a wide variety of produce, meats, and dry goods at fantastic prices. Shopping beyond standard, big-box grocery stores can lead to unique finds and great savings!

Utilize Coupons and Loyalty Programs

Another effective way to save on Thanksgiving groceries is to use coupons! It’s not necessary to clip every coupon, but grab the relevant ones when you find them. They can add up to some healthy savings, especially if you’re able to stack them with loyalty rewards or other store promotions.

Conveniently, a number of grocery stores now offer digital coupons, making them way less cumbersome than paper ones. If you sign up for the grocery store’s online loyalty program, you can easily load and use digital coupons at checkout.

Share the Costs

Who says you have to bear the burden of the entire cost of the meal? Check with your guests to see if anyone would be willing to share some of the cost with you! Many people are happy to contribute and may even offer to simply bring a dish instead, easing your share of groceries and making the meal prep much more manageable.

Encourage BYOB

Alcohol is notoriously expensive. Instead of springing for a full bar, consider reducing or even cutting out your alcohol offerings entirely. One easy way to save is by encouraging your guests to bring their own beverages. That way, everyone can enjoy their favorites without stretching your budget!

Leverage Your Credit Card Rewards

Rewards credit cards can be very beneficial if used responsibly. By using a rewards credit card for everyday purchases, you can earn points, miles, or cashback. These rewards can later be redeemed for future groceries, travel, or other expenses.

One of the most practical ways to use your rewards is by applying them as a statement credit, which can directly offset the cost of your Thanksgiving groceries. By strategically leveraging your credit card rewards, you can significantly reduce your grocery budget!

Host a Belated Thanksgiving Meal

Much like any other holiday, celebrating later often means discounted prices on groceries and holiday decor. Hosting a belated Thanksgiving meal can offer better flexibility for you, your guests, and your wallet. A relaxed schedule allows for easy-going gatherings and creative menus without the busyness and expense of a typical Thanksgiving feast.

Enjoy a Budget-Friendly Thanksgiving

With just over a week to go until Thanksgiving, I hope you find value in today’s post! With these tips, we consistently save on weekly groceries, and they’re especially helpful around the holidays.

By planning ahead and being resourceful, you can experience a delicious Thanksgiving feast at a reasonable cost. From taking advantage of sales and utilizing credit card rewards to simplifying your menu or coordinating a potluck, there are plenty of ways to lower expenses for a festive and fun celebration.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with togetherness, gratitude, and delicious dishes—made affordably!
