To celebrate fall, Brian and I looked into a scenic train ride to see the fall colors. Wowza! We found prices ranging from $75 to $115 per person, which is more than we wanted to spend. I suppose that’s to be expected since it’s peak season for tourists clamoring for views of changing leaves. Unfortunately, high prices and excessive commercialization have turned changing seasons into a marketable event in countless capacities. From pumpkin spice everything and higher fall festival admission fees to pricey themed menus and apple-picking experiences, it can be tricky finding affordable ways to enjoy the season.

Celebrate Fall on a Budget

We like to appreciate the simplicity of fall without overspending. Whether it’s a cozy walk through the woods, a beautiful scenic drive, or a day trip to a local farm, there are a number of ways to celebrate fall. It’s all about enjoying the beauty of the season, from the vibrant colors to the crisp air.

In other words, don’t sweat it if a pricey train ride isn’t on your list this year. Here are some other ways to celebrate fall without breaking the bank:

Hit the Road with GuideAlong

If you opt to pass on a scenic train ride like we did, then a scenic drive might be the next best thing! Brian and I love a good road trip, whether it’s a day trip or a multi-week adventure. While we have planned plenty on our own, we have become huge fans of GuideAlong, a GPS-led audio driving tour. It’s completely self-guided and allows us to explore at our own pace while providing historical context and stories that help us connect to our surroundings.

GuideAlong - Along for the Drive

GuideAlong currently offers more than 60 tours, covering routes throughout the United States, Canada, and even Australia. They highlight hidden gems, scenic overlooks, and must-visit landmarks that you might otherwise miss along the way!

Potluck Picnic in the Park

Gather up your friends and family for a fall-themed potluck. Celebrate fall through different interpretations of chili, roasted vegetables, baked casseroles, hearty stews, and pumpkin pie. Enjoy a cozy al fresco dining experience in a park or city square, surrounded by the backdrop of autumn leaves.

Family-Owned Farms

Sure, you could visit the most popular and advertised farms for a fall-centric experience, but be prepared for the crowds, overpriced activities, and a more manufactured feel. Brian and I prefer to scope out small family-owned farms for a more charming and local experience. Local family-owned farms often offer free or low-cost seasonal activities, such as apple-picking, pumpkin-picking, hayrides, petting zoos, farm tours, and even natural trails.

DIY Fall Crafts

Recently, I came across an online forum that highlighted a growing trend among influencers. Many of them collect fall decor for promotional purposes, only to toss it out the next year in favor of new items for their content. I am not a fan! Personally, I find it to be wasteful. For a frugal-fun take on fall decor, venture outside to collect pinecones, sticks, or leaves. Decorate with nature, spend some time on your own craft, and appreciate the season without dropping cash on cheap, factory-made nonsense.

  • Soak pinecones in essential oils
  • Build a natural leaf wreath
  • Make a leaf print with different paint colors
  • Create your own fall-inspired scented candles
  • and plenty more

Movie Marathon

Switch on some fall-themed flicks! Whether it’s movie night or movie weekend, cozying up in warm blankets with a healthy dose of festive charm on the big screen is a fantastic way to celebrate the season. If you’re feeling extra spirited, open up your windows for a crisp feel or light some autumn-scented candles to set the mood.

Movie suggestions:

  • The Lost Boys (1987)
  • Dead Poets Society (1989)
  • Death Becomes Her (1992)
  • Hocus Pocus (1993)
  • Casper (1995)
  • Good Will Hunting (1997)
  • Stepmom (1998)
  • The Lake House (2006)
  • Dan in Real Life (2007)
  • Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
  • Prisoners (2013)
  • The Ritual (2017)

I am personally partial to dark and disturbing themes for the fall season, which isn’t for everyone (including Brian…)! Therefore, the list above strays away from the scaries and offers an excellent place to start!

Bake Seasonal Treats

Baking was once one of my favorite fall activities. I loved experimenting with pumpkin, spices, caramels, and all things warm and comforting. Admittedly, it’s been a few years since I’ve gotten into the holiday spirit. There’s something to be said for the inviting scents of freshly baked pastries and pies. Celebrate fall with a recipe or two that transforms your home into a cozy, warm retreat.

Take a Walk

Head outside for a walk around the neighborhood or a local park. If you have access to a natural trail or mountainside hike, you could very well immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of shifting seasons and changing leaves. It’s one of our favorite and most simple ways to experience fall.

Light a Bonfire

Warm up on a cool evening with a toasty bonfire. The crackling fire, flickering flames, and gentle heat create a magical ambience that chases away the chill.

Quiet Outdoor Moments

Sip on a cup of tea or coffee, or grab a book and head outside. Spending quiet time outdoors, whether you choose to sit in silence or enjoy a little reading, can be an immersive escape that envelopes you in a peaceful fall aesthetic. Listen to the wildlife around you, watch the swaying leaves as they drift to the ground, and savor the cool, gentle breeze. There are a variety of other mindful, quiet activities to enjoy outside while appreciating the season, such as:

  • Journaling
  • Sunset-watching
  • Stargazing
  • Meditation
  • Yard work

Small Town Day Trips

Take a day to explore a small town or set out on a road trip through several of them. There’s something special about a quaint, quiet community that gently allows for the change in seasons without the big box fanfare or the stampede of crowds. Brian and I will often get lost in small towns, traversing their charming streets, discovering local shops, and wandering into cozy cafes. We have found that many of these communities walk to the beat of their own drums; they share in their own traditions and have their own unique charms, especially when it comes to celebrating different seasons.

Fall into the Season

Why pay top dollar for fall festivities when there’s no need? Celebrate fall in your own backyard, take a scenic drive, or visit a local family-owned farm for affordable, fun-filled experiences. Fall into the season without the hefty price tag.

Though Brian and I are a little disappointed to miss out on a train ride this fall, we’re excited about experiencing the season in our own way. We look forward to exploring new hiking trails, roasting marshmallows, and watching some scary movies! Well, that last one is more for me, but I love that Brian supports me!

  1. As for as movies go, don’t forget “The Fifth Element” and “Second Hand Lions” for a little comedic relief. Some family farms also have corn mazes where you can get lost for hours (especially if you have a poor sense of direction). Haunted houses offer a chance to get your blood to run cold. If you’re interested in Model Railroading, October and November are the months that you can visit local Georgia layouts. The Piedmont Pilgrimage provides various open houses where you can get your fill of these delightful worlds. Check out https://piedmont-div.org/ for more details.

    1. Those are some excellent suggestions! “The Fifth Element” is really a fun classic. Great movie options. I love the idea of corn mazes and haunted houses; they’re such a fun and charming way to get in the “holiday spirit.” And thanks for the tip on the model railroads! That’s another creative activity to affordably celebrate fall 🙂 I appreciate that there are different ways to enjoy the season without having to spend a whole lot of money. Thank you for these fun ideas!!
