It’s been a contentious year for politics. Honestly, the contention traces back to a number of historical moments and figures for me, but that’s a different conversation. Let’s just say that politics have been screwy for a while. As Election Day approaches, it’s natural for anxious feelings to rise as differing opinions bubble to the surface. Here’s the thing, though: If you’ve voted, you’ve done all you can. It’s going to be a noisy week ahead, and I’d much prefer one without hostility. If you do, too, then read on as I share six mellow moves to help you enjoy a more peaceful week.

Cultivate Peace

You’re not going to find peace unless you make a conscious effort to make room for it. Personally, I am very ready to be free from constant attack ads and accusatory rhetoric. It’s necessary to recognize that you can only control what is actually within your control.

Get Some Quality Sleep

Seriously! Try committing to a decent sleep schedule. Brian and I have just wrapped up a 2-week challenge to get a full eight hours of sleep each night. We’ve been managing with only 6 hours of sleep for so long that adding an extra 2 hours has been a big adjustment, especially since we wake up at 4:30am! In any case, actually getting quality shut-eye will do wonders for one’s mindset and general well-being.

If you have trouble drifting off to sleep, you might consider a bedtime routine to help you feel more relaxed. Incorporating low lighting, gentle stretching, or reading can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Ultimately, creating a comfortable sleep space free from distraction can be a big help in setting the stage for a restful night. Turn off the TV, put away the phone, and instead create a cozy nook to clear your mind.

Limit News Consumption

The 24-hour news cycle can distort our perspective and amplify stress. Breaking news constantly interrupts our daily routines, announcing itself on TV screens, cell phones, and all over social media. This endless exposure can lead to anxiety and a sense of helplessness.

Consider this—do you truly want to be tuning in all week? Will it matter if you stay up all night on Election Day to watch the results roll in? The end result is going to be the same whether you lose sleep or not. Tune in briefly if you’d like, but then focus on something else.

By limiting news consumption, there is more time to process information more thoughtfully. In fact, there’s more time to spend on other activities that actually promote joy and relaxation.

Unplug from Social Media

Speaking of media consumption, man, oh man, does society have a serious problem when it comes to social media. The constant barrage of notifications can create an addictive cycle, drawing users back for one scroll after another.

For many, social media serves as a lifeline, a journal, an ego boost, and a way to stay updated on current events. According to a recent survey, half of U.S. adults admit to getting some of their news from their socials. As someone with a research background, I find that admission simultaneously confusing and alarming. We need evidence, people! Multiple sources! Facts, not feelings!

If you have a social media account, then you’re probably familiar with the kind of misinformation and disinformation that floats around. Do yourself a favor and unplug this week. There’s a high probability that social media is going to be filled with sensationalized content and exaggerated claims (but honestly, what else is new?). Save your mental energy to explore offline activities and prioritize your well-being.

Explore Nature

Get some fresh air! I don’t just mean walking around your block or neighborhood, but that’s certainly better than staying inside. If you can, head to a park or a nearby trail. Leave behind your neighborhood, the political yard signs, and all of the general noise. You might have to travel a bit farther to find a good escape, but it will be worth it.

Take in the sights and sounds and allow yourself a moment to recharge. Whether it’s a challenging hike or simply sitting by a lake, you’ll find that nature has a tendency to remind you of life’s simple joys.

Brian and I love venturing outdoors so much that we actually bookended the election with hiking plans. What better way to disconnect from the brewing tension than to explore some amazing trails?

Get Lost in a Good Book

Literature doesn’t top everyone’s list of favorites, but it sure does provide an awesome excuse to relax with a cup of tea and a fictional adventure. If you’re a nonfiction enthusiast, I will never hesitate to recommend Mary Roach’s Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. It’s amazing, though I am keenly aware that others might not enjoy it as much as I do.

Getting lost in a good book, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, is such a simple and relaxing way to carve out time for yourself. Make sure it’s an enjoyable topic, though! After all, we’re looking for a peaceful week.

If you’re not the type to pick up a physical book, then tune into an audiobook. Audiobooks are free through the library! Free and fun? That’s my kind of jam.

Plan a Hands-On Activity

Distract yourself from all of the political shenanigans with a hands-on activity! Get together with friends and family for a game night or craft event. Even with differing political views, it’s possible (and healthy) to continue to connect and support each other beyond politics! If the relationships genuinely matter, don’t allow politics to divide you. Hands-on activities can shift the energy and conversation away from the election and encourage lighthearted fun and connection.

  • Host a cooking or baking day.
  • Set up a puzzle marathon.
  • Plan a themed movie marathon.
  • Go thrifting.
  • Go on a scavenger hunt.
  • Book a private escape room.
  • Meet for an indoor rock climbing session.
  • Explore new hiking trails.

Prioritize for a Peaceful Week

As I noted earlier, peace requires intentionality; you must actively create space for it in your life. I don’t think anyone is surprised at the level of vitriol and polarization we are facing now, especially during Election Week. Do we have to engage in it? Absolutely not.

This week will come and go, and a new elected official will take office in 2025. You’ve done all you can by voting. So, let’s take this week to decompress. It’s time to move on and focus on what’s in our control. By prioritizing peace this week, you care for yourself and those around you.
