Happy New Year to all of you! I hope that you carved out time to pause and appreciate all that you have experienced last year. This season of reflection can create a mindset shift that inspires positive changes and a sense of purpose for the year ahead. As we step into 2025, you may already have some goals in mind, whether they’re financial, personal, or professional. Despite the initial excitement, however, it’s common to hit a roadblock just weeks into the new year. Goals and motivation tend to fade as ordinary routines and daily habits take over.
So what’s the trick to staying motivated and on track?
Push Past Quitter’s Day
Knowledge is power. Did you know that the second Friday of January is notoriously regarded as Quitter’s Day? Research shows that roughly 80% of Americans ditch their New Year’s resolutions by this date. Recognizing this reality is the first step to understanding accountability and developing a plan to remain committed to your goals.
Don’t throw in the towel just yet! After all, we have 50 more weeks of growth, connection, and experiences ahead of us. With dedication and a strategic approach, we can push past Quitter’s Day and work toward meaningful changes that keep us motivated and excited to build a fulfilling life.
Maximize Your Motivation
Now that Quitter’s Day is on our radar, it’s time to shift our focus to staying on track by establishing a routine that encourages and celebrates motivation. Though it can be daunting to face the ambitious goals before you, it’s important to understand that progress comes from small, consistent actions.
Start with small steps and concentrate on tiny actions to build momentum. If you’re new here, you may not know the extent of my love for the little things in life—the quiet moments of joy, the small victories, and the incremental wins that often go unnoticed. Ultimately, it’s these little things that connect each moment to each day and shape our perspectives and our journeys. Let’s just say I’m a huge fan.
Here’s a list of my favorite techniques and tiny actions for maximizing motivation this January:
Start in February
Though it may seem counterintuitive to delay your commitment, doing so allows you to gather your thoughts and create a realistic plan to achieve your goal. The first week of January can technically be included as part of the holiday season in which food, family, and friends often fill our schedules. If this is the case for you, it may be difficult to kickstart your goals for the year.
Another upside is that February is the shortest month of the year, so if you’re planning for a month-long challenge, February is a great place to start. With fewer days to manage, you can create a concentrated effort without feeling overwhelmed!
Track Your Progress
Carve out time every two weeks to review your goals and your progress. It doesn’t have to be a “big to-do”; simply set aside a few minutes on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Review the actions you’ve taken and reflect on how they’ve contributed to your overall progress. If you find yourself at a crossroads, take some time to reflect on what works, what doesn’t, and adjust as necessary.
10-Minute Sessions
Consistent daily practice or exposure to positive influences related to your goals will not only build motivation but also encourage a sense of accomplishment. Spend 10 minutes each day working on a task or surrounded by inspiration that resonates with your aspirations.
For example, when I am focused on personal finance, I spend a little time each day checking financial market trends, reading investment forums, or tuning into YouTube videos centered on budgeting and money management that motivate me to stay disciplined for long-term success.
Team Up with an Accountability Partner
Sometimes it’s easier to stay motivated when someone is cheering you on. Find an accountability partner that will help keep you accountable and challenge you to stay the course. Whether you choose to elect that one friend (who might be a touch annoying at times but really cares), a dependable family member, or a mentor, the support of someone who genuinely believes in your potential can have a significant impact on your progress.

Plan Ahead
I love this one! Planning ahead is a smart, strategic move to keep in your back pocket at all times. This isn’t to say you need a plan every single time for every single event. Rather, it’s a quick guideline to help you prioritize when challenges and unexpected occurrences arise!
Take a few minutes each week to plan out some key tasks and actions you would like to tackle for the following week. Not only will this offer a helpful roadmap for the days ahead, but it also keeps you looking forward and excited to reach your goals.
Divide and Conquer
Try not to let the immensity of your goals deter your progress; instead, break down a complex goal into smaller, more manageable tasks that make progress feel more achievable. Each small step in the right direction is still progress!
Consider the goal of decluttering and organizing your entire home. Rather than attempting to do it all at once, you could focus on one room or even a specific section of a room at a time. To further divide this goal into attainable, bite-sized pieces, you might consider assigning certain tasks each session, such as sorting through a single dresser or closet.
Minimize Distractions
If you’ve just started working towards your goals or you plan to start in February, don’t give up! Stay the course and keep going, even when your energy begins to wane. To maintain your drive, consider creating a focused space that allows you to commit to what you’d truly like to accomplish. Building a fulfilling life is most achievable when your goals genuinely reflect your passion and core values.
What matters most to you? Identify what that is, find a way to incorporate tiny actions that resonate with your values, and prioritize those actions consistently. This intentional focus will help you stay motivated and committed to everyday actions that will bring you closer to achieving your goals and a more fulfilling life.
Ultimately, you can maximize your motivation by minimizing distractions. Let go of the non-serving, unimportant noise in your life and embrace intention. You can do it!
How do you plan to stay motivated this year?

On an earlier post you mentioned that you would like to learn a programming language. One of the most sought after new languages is Python. There are many free courses on-line that will give you a great foundation in coding Python. You may want to visit https://www.python.org/downloads/ to get a working environment onto your laptop or workstation. There are numerous example programs that step you through the code and explain how the language works. Be careful though, coding can become addictive.
Thank you for your encouragement! I’ve heard great things about Python being beginner-friendly. I love that there are so many free tutorials these days! I’m excited to dive in and see how much I can learn.
