Ideally, we want to tread carefully between the two by implementing delayed gratification to reach a healthy balance. After all, life is all about moderation!

What is Delayed Gratification?

Delayed gratification is the postponement of short-term satisfaction in favor of obtaining a more valuable reward in the future. In other words, it means holding off on indulging oneself now for an even better feeling later.

Let’s say someone is saving for a down payment to buy a house, but they find themselves eyeing a brand new luxury car. They think, Well, I’ve been working hard and saving money, so what’s the harm in buying a car? I like it, and I have the money to buy it. I can save more afterwards!

Instead of focusing on buying a house, this individual has now spent their savings on an unnecessary and impulsive purchase, which pushes back the timeline of their original goal: buying a home. They gave in to the temptation of short-term satisfaction (or instant gratification) to indulge in a depreciating asset instead of focusing on their goal of achieving and building equity.

While it might be difficult to resist the temptation of immediate rewards, the idea of delayed gratification is that the long-term goal or benefit is well worth the sacrifice.

Strategies to Delay Gratification

There are ways to scratch that itch of instant enjoyment when delayed gratification feels too restrictive or depriving. It just takes a certain amount of self-control and self-discipline to stay on course and remain focused on long-term goals.

Here’s how to find balance through delayed gratification:

Be aware of impulses.

Effectively manage urges, decision-making, and communication through self-awareness.

Set realistic expectations.

Define goals, set healthy boundaries, and learn to be flexible in changing circumstances.

Keep long-term goals in mind.

Don’t lose sight of the big picture. Remind yourself that you are saying no in order to say yes to other opportunities.

Break down goals into smaller milestones.

Instill a sense of progress and accomplishment by focusing on completing smaller tasks leading up to the larger goal. This can help you stay disciplined and feel less overwhelmed as you work toward the big picture.

By celebrating small victories along the way, you are creating a reward system that feels indulgent enough to recognize your efforts and hard work. It helps reinforce a positive mindset and provides a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep working towards a long-term goal.

Wasteful habits have become the norm as we’ve evolved into an impulse-driven, consumerist culture. Today’s buy-dispose-replace cycle generates staggering amounts of unnecessary waste that has a direct impact on consumer debt levels, environmental degradation, and future generations. Practicing delayed gratification reduces the occurrence of wasteful spending on unnecessary purchases, thereby resulting in reduced waste altogether.

Another encouraging byproduct and benefit of delayed gratification is the accumulation of savings. By refraining from spending money on impulse purchases, we inadvertently create a nice little safety net for ourselves.
